The God of Small Things
by Arundhati Roy
Set in Kerala, India, in the 1960s when Communism threatened the age-old caste system, the story is about the childhood of fraternal twins whose lives are destroyed by the “Love Laws” that lay down “who should be loved, how and how much”. The story begins with a funeral. Interwoven in this tragedy is a tapestry of local politics, social taboos and of history–all of which fatefully come together leaving a shattered family.
Rahel, one of the twins, notices that “at times like these. Only the Small Things are ever said. The Big Things lurk unsaid inside.”
